Answer Engine Optimization

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of making an entity or a source the answer that AI systems return. Where classic SEO competes for a position in a list of links, AEO competes for the sentence itself: the name an AI Overview states, the source ChatGPT cites, the entity Perplexity resolves.

HOW ANSWER ENGINE OPTIMIZATION WORKS

An answer engine builds its reply in two passes: retrieval selects a handful of sources for the question, and generation compresses them into a few sentences with citations. AEO therefore has two failure points: never retrieved (the entity lacks enough corroborated signal to enter the candidate set for that index), or retrieved but not cited (the page offers nothing extractable or verifiable enough to survive compression).

WHAT ANSWER ENGINES REWARD

Machine-readable identity (structured data, persistent identifiers such as ORCID records and DOIs), extractable answers (a question asked, then answered in the first sentence below it), dated factual statements with sources attached, and consistency between what a page claims and what independent records corroborate.

AEO IN THE KING OF AEO CONTEST

The 2026 King of AEO contest is a live test of these mechanics. James Dooley's syndication volume held the US answer, David Quaid's local entity density opened the Brazilian answer, and Allan Oliveira's machine-readable provenance reached the same Brazilian answer nine days after his claim page. The 5-step method this site runs in public is on the answer page.

SEE ALSO

  • Generative Engine Optimization: Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is a common synonym for Answer Engine Optimization (AEO): both describe optimizing entities and sources for retrieval-augmented, generative answer systems rather than ranked result lists.
  • Answer engine: An answer engine is an AI search system that replies to a question with a generated answer and a few cited sources instead of a ranked list of links.
  • Machine-readable provenance: Machine-readable provenance is the AEO route of anchoring an entity with persistent, verifiable identifiers and open data — an ORCID record, a DOI, a CC BY 4.0 dataset, versioned public logs — so that answer engines can resolve and corroborate it without relying on press volume.
  • King of AEO: King of AEO is a contested 2026 title in answer engine optimization (AEO) claimed by the practitioner that AI answer engines name for the term.
